Welcome to our club news for February 2017.
Great to report that City of Coventry women were triumphant in the Trettondags International Cup held in Stockholm on 6-9 January. Victory in the group stages against local team Järfälla Sweden (11-6), was followed by wins in very physical contests against Finland’s Abo (20-4) and Sentterit (21- 6). The final saw Coventry take on the local team Järfälla for a second time, with Captain Vicki Hawkins leading Coventry in a tense contest to a 15-11 victory and seeing them lift the trophy.
This was the second time Coventry has played European club teams this season and the experience has been invaluable especially to the younger players including Anabelle Blurton, Abi Turner and Abi Martin Hicks. Coach Ian Elliot was, “delighted by the way the team adapted to the very different tactical and physical play of the Nordic teams and the strong team performance all of the players”. Coventry now look forward to the Super 5’s in the BWPL finale and the British Championships.
Team with goals in brackets: Laura Fitzharris, Rachel Thompson (6), Annabelle Blurton (2), Abi Martin Hicks (1), Claire Walmsley (7), Ana Nunez Rueda (2), Vick Hawkins (12), Abi Turner (5), Danni Elliot (21), Rachel Hollington (10), Charlotte Noble
On 28 January Swim North West held its under 14 age group championships in Liverpool. City of Manchester WPC swept the board taking gold and silver slots with Bridgefield WPC taking the bronze. The City of Manchester teams were coached by senior team players Dan Paddon (in gold place) and Izzy Howe (in silver place). Very well done to the teams and to all who participated in the event.
Saturday 21 January saw the annual Kent juniors’ under 19s competition to win the Fred Holehouse Shield. Beckenham WPC put in two teams and took the top 2 positions showing their strength once again. Hythe WPC came 3rd and 7oaks WPC came 4th. It was noteworthy that both Hythe and 7oaks brought young teams showing that smaller clubs in Kent are developing strong young players for the future as well as the larger clubs. The future for Kent water polo is very bright.
Beckenham WPC topped the 2016 Kent Mens League. Congratulations to Olympian Jack Waller who was the top goal scorer with 42 goals – an average of 3.82 goals per game!
Holly Campbell was finally presented with her Beckenham player of the year trophy. Holly also plays for Otter Lutra. Congratulations Holly!
We mentioned last month that Sasha Tinkler-Davies was named Kent junior player of the year. She has also received her trophy this month so congratulations again Sasha!
Dorset Water Polo senior men defeated Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucester to win the Jack Jones Trophy and with it the South West Title.
Warrington WPC men’s team came out champions of Cheshire after victories over Chester and Birkenhead at Europa Pools. Cheshire Champions – L Atkinson, D Price, I Musgrove, O Rhodes, D Farini, P Daintith, A Burke, A Farini, A Brown, & D Richard

Congratulations to the Watford WPC under 14 team for winning the WL Championship for the 2016/17 season after defeating Beckenham (7-2), Worthing (10-0) and Chelmsford (6-3).

Is it true that Sport England have withdrawn all funding for Waterpolo?
Thank you for your question Jonathan. We will raise the matter with the ASA’s water polo manager Suzie Stevenson, and also with Ian Elliot, the volunteer Chair of the England Water Polo Management Group, and will revert to you as soon as we receive a response. Thanks again for your interest. Best wishes, WPE Admin
Hello Jonathan, we have now had a response to your question from Ian Elliot, The Chair of the WPMG.
Ian writes, “The bid for Sport England Funding has been submitted this week and will be considered by the Sport England board in March. We are aware that the funding from Sport England has been reduced or withdrawn for other sports and that future funding for water polo may be significantly reduced.” We hope that this is helpful. Because your question, and that of others posted on this site, raise issues of wide importance to the sport and the info from Ian will be of interest to many we will be publishing this in a news post on this site and also on the associated EWP facebook page. Thanks again for your comment.
Sport England recently awarded handball £1.415m so presumably the ASA/BS will secure a similar amount for water polo
Thank you for your question Graham. There is a lot of community interest and concern in this area, and we will now raise your question with the ASA’s water polo manager Suzie Stevenson, and also with Ian Elliot, the volunteer Chair of the England Water Polo Management Group, and will revert to you as soon as we receive a response. Thanks again for your interest. Best wishes, WPE Admin
