We have just been made aware that Malta Aquatic Sports Association has decided that they are no longer able to host the 4th Commonwealth Water Polo Championship which was planned for 23-30 September 2018.
Understandably this is both surprising and very disappointing, but we understand that other participating nations have been asked to see if they can run the tournament instead. Ian Elliot, chair of the England Water Polo Management Group is now working with other members of the Strategic Group to explore all avenues to attempt to secure a meaningful tournament for our senior athletes towards the end of the year.
He said, “We have made such huge gains in water polo programmes over the last three years, that we need to maintain this momentum. We are working hard with our colleagues and stakeholders to determine how best to move forward. As soon as we have any further news we will ensure that we get this to you through our England Water Polo media channels.”

such a sad decision, we are already a ‘marginalised’ aquatic sport, not competing at the main games, if at all in some cycles & now one of the ‘bigger’ European water polo nations decides they can’t host a once in 4 year event which won’t come to them for a number of decades now if at all, but they can manage to host many other water polo events – shame all round.
Hi ,
Is there any possibility of a replacement competition?
Regards,
Lynne
Hi Lynne, very regrettably this event will not take place now. The time frame after cancellation by Malta was simply too short to allow a replacement event to be developed. Kind regards, WPE Admin
