As 2016 comes to an end, we reflect on a year of development for water polo in England. Our England and GB juniors were active in international competition during the year while behind the scenes the ASA’s water polo management group led by Ian Elliot have been working hard to restart an international senior program.
Liaising with multiple agencies including the ASA, British Swimming, their counterparts at Scottish Swimming, Swim Wales and with British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), the water polo management group is delighted to be able to confirm the entry of GB junior U17 men and women’s teams into the 2017 LEN European Championships and on the senior side, to oversee the announcement of a England men’s team to compete in May 2017 in the EU Nations Cup in Poland with a women’s team competing in July in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
In addition, the group has been able to secure initial support for entry to the World Student Games which will be held in Chinese Taipei in August 2017. This will be confirmed early in the New Year. If confirmed, this squad will be a British squad and travel under the BUCS banner.
With these exciting developments planned for 2017, the prospects for water polo in the UK now look much improved compared to this time a year ago. With this in mind, Ian and members of the ASA’s water polo management group, plus the volunteer comms team of Chris, Andy, Richard and Anne would like to thank you for your continued support, and wish you all a very Happy Christmas, and best wishes for 2017!
