Our May club news is out! -

Welcome to our club news for May 2017.

The National Age Group Championships have been in full swing in April.  The standard of competition has been high with clubs competing from all over the country.

Girls’ U19 NAG Championship

The final saw City of Manchester beat the defending champions, London Otter, by 5-3 to claim the crown.  City of Manchester took an early lead and were able to hold on to that lead despite a spirited fight-back from Otter to take the title for 2017.

The bronze medal match was a close and dramatic game between City of Liverpool and Hucknall with Hucknall winning the match 7-6.

Girls’ U17 NAG Championship

London Otter defeated City of Liverpool to claim the Girls’ U17 National Age Group Water Polo title.  At the end of the first quarter the teams were equal but Otter scored 5 goals in the second quarter and conceded none giving them a comfortable lead at half time.  Despite a spirited rally by City of Liverpool Otter held on to their lead and the final score was 11-5.

The bronze medal match was between Newton Abbot and Tyldesley.  The Devon side was not to be beaten and the final score came in at 13-5.

Boys’ U17 NAG Championship

 City of Sheffield won the Boys’ U17 Championship for only the second time in their history.  It was a hard fought competition with both finalists unbeaten as they entered the final match.  City of Manchester was worthy opposition with a tight first quarter.  City of Sheffield were then able to pull away with a final score of 15-8.

The bronze medal match was a close game between Newton Abbot and Ealing that ended 11-8 to Ealing.

Boys’ U19 NAG Championship

Sedgefield won the U19 title after a dramatic penalty shoot out against defending champions, Exeter.  It was an incredibly tight match with level scores of 8-8 at full time.   Sedgefield scored every penalty making the final score 10-12.

The bronze medal match was between Croydon Amphibians and City of Manchester with the northern team winning the match 8-15.

Girl’s U19 Water Polo Plate

City of Bristol dominated this competition winning matches against Cheltenham (5-4) and Otter Futura (5-2) to win the Championship. Cheltenham took silver and Otter Futura took bronze.

Girls’ U17 Water Polo Plate

Rotherham won the plate after winning all 4 of their matches.  Silver position went to Otter Futura and bronze to City of Sheffield.

Boys U17 Water Polo Plate

Bridgefield won the U17 Boys’ plate after a very strong performance in the tournament.  They faced an unbeaten Watford in the final and the match was at times too close to call but Bridgefield triumphed in the end with a 2-3 score.

Boys U19 Water Polo Plate

This was a hard fought competition with some exciting and close matches.  The winners of the Plate were RotherhamCamarthen took silver and Cheltenham took bronze.

In other news, Nottingham Leander Water Polo Club embarked on their first ever-overseas tour last month (April) when they travelled to Budapest. Over the course of a weekend they played a total six matches with a fair level of success, winning four and narrowly losing by one goal in another. The photo below is of the squad relaxing after a series of matches against: –

  • Kozgaz and
  • Vodafone Over-50s.

As ever we are pleased to promote new clubs.  Brockwell Water Polo Club started last year and is keen to attract new members.  The club train indoors at Alleyn’s School, Dulwich, until 14 May coached by Claudio Palumbo.  Thereafter the sessions move outdoors to Brockwell Lido where they will be coached by Jim Boucher.  For more information please see the website at http://www.brockwellswimmers.com/water-polo-2017-brockwell-lido/

Are you interested in taking your club away to a training camp?  If so Sport Croatia can organize a water polo camp in one of 20 pools in Slovenia, Croatia or Montenegro.  They can arrange accommodation in hotels or hostels, training in swimming pools, bus transfers to/from airport, flight tickets and optional excursions.  For more information contact them via their web site – http://www.sportscroatia.com/

Need more Team Managers?  East Midlands are running a Team Manager module 1 course specific for water polo and has got a few more places left.

Finally, we note that The Midlands Water Polo League is seeking assistance to reduce the workload of the existing Junior Men’s secretary. Applicants from outside the existing management structure are encouraged to apply to promote a fresh approach to the MWPL.
