Welcome to our club news for July 2017.
Local Leagues
With the conclusion of National club competitions, many local leagues have come to the fore over the last month.
The Midlands Water Polo league is well underway in its second month and as at the time of going to press Solihull are just in the lead with Warley Wasps A following closely behind.
Devon County Water Polo league has also been in action over the last month, with a draw between Devonport and Exeter and some wins for Newton Abbot, the league is turning out to be very interesting and hotly contested.
In the Northern Water Polo league Sheffield are currently in the lead with Castleford hot on their heels!
The Bristol & West Water Polo league has 8 teams competing in Division 1 which is great. Exeter are currently in the lead in Div. 1, Bath University lead in Div. 2, Cheltenham are out in front in the Ladies’ Division and Exeter lead again in the Junior division.
In the London league the Penguin U13 team has won all their games on the 11th June – great job! Still in the London league Watford’s U15 team were crowned champions, congratulations!
Leagues are also underway in Middlesex and Hertfordshire. In the Kent league Faversham are currently just leading Shepway B.
Good luck to all teams in the leagues; we look forward to seeing the conclusion.
Other news …
Great to see that Kent hosted their annual Water Polo Festival on 25 June at Folkestone featuring competitions for U12, U16 and U14 teams from all over the county. The winning teams where, Faversham for the U12s, Hythe for the U14s and Beckenham for the U16s crowns. Well done to all who competed and congratulations to the organisers who pulled off what looked to be a great afternoon of water polo!
Radcliffe S&WPC have also been very busy over this month with many of the junior teams competing in local games, well done and keep up the good work!
City of Coventry took their part in keeping our service men fit with a game against the RAF – Coventry beat the airmen 22-7.
Worthing Water Polo club (pictured) have been steadily building up their girls team and this month they have been able to field a full squad of 13 players to draw against a Basingstoke/Southampton team. The squad ranged in age from 11 to 22 which is a really young team but all the girls played well. Congratulations!
City of Manchester held their annual Festival last Saturday. This was another great event which is continuing to grow in popularity with over 400 young players competing in 36 teams. Devonport won the U12 competition and Bolton School A were the U14 victors.
Congratulations to everyone who played and thanks to COM and all the volunteers who helped organise the day.
After the recent success of the British Water Polo League finals, Cheltenham are hosting an U12 Festival of Water Polo featuring teams from around the country at Sanford Parks Lido, Cheltenham, on 8th July, 12.30pm start. This promises to be a fantastic showcase for junior polo. All are welcome.
In case you missed it, the fixtures for the 1st phase of the hugely-anticipated 2017/18 BWPL season have been released – full details on the BWPL.org website.
Good luck to Enfield Water Polo Club, who are heading on tour to Hungary (July 26th-30th) to take part in a series of training sessions and matches against local teams. The squad (including 87-year-old veteran Roy Naisbitt, pictured) will also get to see the final stages of the Water Polo World Championships, which are taking place on the famous Margit Island in Budapest.
A busy month ahead for Hertfordshire-based clubs with the Biggleswade Water Polo Tournament taking place at Saxon Pool, Saturday 1st July, 5.30pm start. Then it’s the Hertfordshire Knockout Tournament on Saturday 15th July, 12pm start, at Northampton School for Boys. Good luck to all the teams taking part.
A big well done and congratulations to Sheffield Stingrays (pictured), who won the Sheffield Tournament Cup last month, while local rivals, Rotherham, won the Plate Trophy. The outstanding event was a huge success with over 100 children competing, with many playing in their first ever tournament.
The final order was: CUP 1 – Sheffield Stingrays 2 – Sedgefield 3 – NW Fusion 4 – Leeds
PLATE 1 – Rotherham 2 – Durham 3 – Huddersfield Otters 4 -Sheffield Sharks 5 – Matlock Monsters
Coaching Opportunities
A polo coaching opportunity has come up with @brockwellswim and we wondered if anyone is interested in filling the role.
Brockwell Swimmers is a non-profit community swimming club based at Brockwell Lido and is seeking a waterpolo coach for indoor winter polo sessions at St. Joseph’s in Streatham/West Norwood, following two successful outdoor summer seasons. Our sessions are open to over 18s and are for all levels and very recreational (eg “for fun”). Some of our players have played at university level and others are brand new to the sport; but we’re all enthusiastic. A coach is needed for Sundays, 4.30 – 5.30 at St Joseph’s School SE19 3HL. Initial term will be from Sept – Dec 2017. Coaching certificate required (and lifeguarding certification would be beneficial).
Contact: Jason DaPonte polo@brockwellswimmers.com
And, finally, from Norman Leighton, an invite to Rotherham’s Water polo Tournament
We hope you have found this edition of interest. If you have any news you would like to promote please do let Anne know (email ah@waterpoloengland.org).

Having seen a recent post about a waterpolo coaching role. How about a vacancies slot on the website. At Manchester Met we are currently seeking an enthusiastic coach to work with our Cheshire campus players based in Crewe. Anyone know of someone who may be available to Coach Thursday trainings and potentially Wednesday games. Please contact me, Jérôme Read, Performance Sport Manager at Manchester Met.
Thanks for contacting us Jerome, a job vacancies page on the site is a good idea and we’ll give that some thought. Meantime we’ll post out your vacancy on FB and tweet. Best wishes, Chris
