It’s summer (well it’s supposed to be) and July has been a busy month with water polo tournaments and festivals at home and away.
The recent FINA Water Polo World Championships in Budapest attracted the interest of a number of English clubs with players from Cheltenham, Beckenham, Enfield, Otter, London Penguin, Crystal Palace and Hatfield among the confirmed attendees (in the stands!).
While in Budapest Enfield’s 87 year old Roy Naisbitt took the opportunity to demonstrate to the Hungarians that once a shooter, always a shooter. If GBR senior men’s coach Tim Dunsbee is looking for talent, Roy tells us that he is available for selection, though at 87 he may not meet the WUGs criteria!
The photo below is of the young (apart from Roy!) Enfield team on tour who beat a talented local side in Budapest the day before watching the men’s finals on Margit Island.
Special mention also to GB Olympian and former City of Manchester Water Polo club player Angie Winstanley-Smith, who is the coach of the New Zealand women’s team that finished 12th at the World Champs. It was fantastic to see a former elite GB player involved in what was an incredible tournament played in the “the home of water polo”.
The Sussex Senior League is in full swing with Brighton playing Worthing on 14 July. This was a close match until half time when Worthing found its form scoring 9 times without conceding any goals. The end result was Brighton 6, Worthing 18.
Biggleswade held its annual tournament on 1st July. Hatfield were this year’s worthy winners. A great event (and great photos – looked like a really good night!)
Summer is a great time for water polo festivals. City of Cheltenham held their water polo festival in July. Congratulations to Watford U12’s who finished in bronze medal position. Well done all.
West London Penguin also organised a junior friendly tournament at Uxbridge on 2 July. The idea for the event stemmed from disappointment that water polo was not part of the London Youth Games this year. Three clubs participated – WLPenguin, Harrow (based at John Lyon School) and Enfield. Matches were played on two pitches: one for the under 15s and the other for the under 13s. In the under 13 competition WLPenguin took 1st place, John Lyon 2nd and Enfield were 3rd. In the under 15 event John Lyon were 1st, WLPenguin 2nd and Enfield 3rd. A cracking event and thanks to WLPenguin for organising it.
The 2017 Northern League competition took place on Saturday, 22nd July at Maltby, Yorkshire. There were five teams – Sedgefield, Sheffield, Grantham, Bridgefield and Warrington. Each match consisted of two six-minute periods. Tournament final placings – 1st Warrington, 2nd Sheffield, 3rd Sedgefield, 4th Bridgefield, 5th Grantham. Congratulations all.
Lancaster City WPC held their Awards Evening this month. Congratulations to Glen Robinson who was awarded the Players Player and Managers Player.
