Great Britain’s junior women are busy preparing for the 2017 European Junior Water Polo Championships, which will be played in Novi Sad, Serbia (20-27 August).
GB captain Annie Clapperton took time out from training to talk to us about the upcoming competition…
“There are high expectations, but I’m obviously looking forward to the tournament and very proud to be captain.
“There is pressure on us to do well, but I’ve learnt how to control nerves and how to handle the experience of such a big event after playing in last year’s Europeans in The Hague.
“In Holland we competed against the continent’s best teams, who are all really strong.
“Sophie Jackson, Lily Turner, Katy Cutler and Robyn Greenslade all gained valuable experience as well and we all learnt how to set team and individual targets during matches, which helped us achieve our aims and objectives.
“The team in The Hague had several young players when we finished ninth and that experience has given us confidence we can improve on that this year
“As centre forward, I’m expected to win major fouls and score goals and help the team win games.
“Our coach, Nick Hume, has motivated and developed the team tactically and the squad has worked very hard in training.
“With everything we’ve learnt and seeing how we’re playing, it’s given us confidence we can reach the top eight and qualify for next year’s World junior Championships.
“Personally, I have received lots of support from my clubs and, of course, my family, with my mum, dad and twin sister all travelling out to Serbia to come and watch and support me and the team.”
