Once again the England Water Polo Management Group, led by Chair Ian Elliot, has managed to secure a LEN European Qualifying Tournament; this time for the U19 Great Britain men in May 2018.
The highly successful tournament for U17 men last year was very highly regarded by the LEN delegate at the time, and this may well have contributed to the assurance of another well-organised event this year, with enormous supporter interest.
Mark Ray, who is currently part of the EWPMG’s strategic group, said, ‘this is fantastic news for the continuing resurgence of water polo in England. We are now a credible player in the delivery and competition of European events, and we hope to release an ambitious 5-year competition strategy very soon’.
Great Britain find themselves in Group C, along with Lithuania, Ukraine and former champions, Greece. Sean King, Head Coach of the U19 men’s team has responded to the draw in a short but insightful interview with Mark Ray.
As part of their preparation, the U19 men’s team have been invited to train with Croatia’s top club VK Jug, by their head coach Vjekoslav Kobescak.
This is a great compliment to the team who are showing dogged determination to qualify in the LEN European Qualification Tournament in May.
The 5 day training camp 12-16 February offers unrivalled training facilities, and the opportunity to play against the club side boasting many international players.
The travelling squad comprises the coaches Sean King and Andy McGinty, ably assisted by Team Manager Colin Walsh. The players selected are:
Harrison Barker-Smith
James Blything
Connor Carpenter
Tom Hunt
Matt Madden
Tom Manley
Bill Moores
Michael Patterson
John Pratt
Ben Ray
Ben Riding
James Spencer-Boyce
Ben Stephenson
Chris Sturtevant
Isaac Wass
We look forward to updates from the camp, which we will release through the social media channels throughout.
Good luck chaps!
