England Water Polo Feb Club News is out! -

First off, we have a new team member here at England water Polo!! We are very pleased to report that James Spencer Boyce has agreed to assist with managing the England Water Polo Instagram account. James is currently studying at the University of Exeter, and is a former England U21 international who now plays for Invicta in BWPL. James spends a lot of time coaching his home club Beckenham whilst currently undertaking an advisory role on improving grassroots water polo for Swim England.  James’ arrival increases the volunteer comms team at England Water Polo to 5, and significantly reduces the average age so we give him a very warm welcome!

On 19th & 20th January Watford U13’s made the trip to Galway, Ireland for the annual Corrib/Tribes tournament.  You may remember that Watford were the worthy winners of the cup last year beating the local side Corrib in the final.  This year’s event saw 12 teams compete in a closely contested event.  Unfortunately, Watford could not repeat last year’s victory; they lost out to the overall winners, Corrib, in the semi-finals.  However it was a great tournament and all the teams had a good time. What a fantastic experience!

Well done Watford U13s!

Congratulations to Charlie Richardson, who was awarded the Jack Petchey Award for November 2018.  Charlie was nominated by coach Aloka Prelis who said, ‘Charlie is and always has been a team player. While being a good attacking player he is also a good defensive player and many a time I have seen him in games gasping for breath, being tired but yet chasing down players on defence just to help the team save a goal. He is also hard on himself and has the qualities of a hard working young player and always looks to improve himself. He does not stick to one position but jumps in goal when needed – always a ‘team first’ attitude. He always asks on areas that he can improve and when he needs guidance.’  Well done Charlie!  Charlie is pictured below with coach Aloka Prelis.

The first national water polo championship was held in 1888 at the old Lambeth Baths in London.  The final was played between Burton Amateur and Otter with the Burton team winning 3-0.  Over 130 years later Otter is still going strong as a leading women’s and men’s club!

Our teammates in America

Great to see Sophie Jackson flying out to the USA at the beginning of January to start her university career at the University of Michigan.  Sophie has a four-year water polo scholarship and is pictured below with fellow GB teammate and now college buddy, Kathy Rogers.

Congratulations to Ashley Castle for making the Men’s Golden Coast Conference All-Academic Water Polo Team for the third consecutive year.  The team consists of members who carried a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale), played in at least 50-percent of the team’s contests in the just completed 2018 campaign and was classified as a full-time student at his institution.  Ashley has maintained a perfect GPA of 4.0.  Well done Ashley!
