August has been another busy month on the international front with our Great Britain U19 women having a great European Championship tournament in Zagreb, Croatia.
Led by Head Coach Izzy Howe, with ACs Jade Smith and Michael Patterson and TM Victoria Dickens, our U19 women secured five wins from seven games, scoring 93 goals and with only one loss in regular time. Great Britain’s overall tournament top scorers in Zagreb – Amelie Perkins (23), Harriet Dickens (23), Lucy Blenkinship (15), Zianna Wright (9), Hannah Pyper (6), Amelie Cornell (6), Isobelle Robb (3), Lily Ross (3), Phillipa Danielson (2), Lucy Bullock (2) and Juliett Lyons (1). Massive congratulations to our international athletes but also a huge thanks to their parents, families and their coaches and teammates back at their home clubs, without whom none of the players would have been able to play on the European stage. It was amazing to see the spread of British clubs who were involved in the development of these athletes:
with honourable mentions for San Diego State University and Monaco!
Also in international action was one of our top domestic referees, Max Gerasimov, who was chosen to officiate at the semi-final stage of the European Championships. This is a big honour and indicates the quality of Max’s refereeing and the respect in which he is held at European level, well done Max!
Meantime the development of the U18 and U20 junior women’s squads continues with a training camp at Nottingham University this weekend. Nick Hume’s squad are busy preparing for next month’s Next Generation cup in Barcelona. Watford ladies supported the teams by coming to scrimmage for the past two days, and were joined by referee Damian Taylor, once again demonstrating the support our clubs and officials consistently provide on an entirely voluntary basis to make international representation possible, thanks all!
August is a great month for taking a club trip overseas and that is exactly what the City of Sheffield Water Polo Club has done, with a 7 day training camp in Malta hosted by SPR Travel Malta and Sirens ASC. The players had an amazing experience being coached by international coaches/referee with an emphasis on technique. Various games were played against the Maltese teams in the amazing pool complexes and the sea, and there was also some down time with a boat trip, the water park, the beach and to the capital Valetta. A massive highlight of the the trip was going to the national stadium to watch two top league games…the men’s one went to the penalties with the other being COSWPC hosts Sirens ASC winning the Maltese championship cup.
COSWPC would like to thank Rapid Response Telecoms for sponsoring their hoodies, and organiser Gabby Williams would be happy to pass on contact details if other clubs are interested for 2025. For more information please email her here
There’s been outdoor polo fun closer to home this month too. On Sat 10th August MANUP! Water Polo hosted their annual outdoor water polo tournament at Salford Quays Media City. A great day of polo saw Rotherham Metro Water Polo Club triumph in the women’s event with MMU taking the men’s trophy. For more information contact MANUP! here.
A bit further south, Lyme Splash ran another very successful Water Polo sea championship at The Cobb in Lyme Regis on 23rd and 24th August. Congratulations to the women’s and men’s winners, Daffodils and Cheltenham, and the runners-up, Bristol Uni and Boldmere. For information about joining the fun next year click here.
