Welcome to the April edition of the Water Polo News. Who would have thought at the start of the month that all water polo activities would be cancelled due to Covid-19? Never-the-less the first part of the month was extremely busy and we set out the highlights below.
The big news is that City of Manchester are champions of both the Men’s and Women’s Super Fives Championship. They are the first club to win both titles in the same year. That both teams were unbeaten shows the amazing strength of the teams. Hats off to you all; an amazing achievement!
Congratulations also go to Exeter Water Polo women who have secured promotion to the 2nd Division of the British Water Polo League in their debut year. Another fantastic achievement.
The winners of the men’s Championship 2 competition of the British Water Polo League were Penguin. Congratulations guys!
Bolton School successfully defended their under 18 ESSA title. This victory means that they have won the title for the 7th consecutive year! What a team!
The under 15 ESSA title went to Trinity College. Very well done to all involved.
Worthing under 14s won the London Winter League after the final play-off rounds at Queen Elizabeth School Barnett. Great job!
Always on the look out for new team we note that St George’s Central CE Primary School won the Mini-Polo tournament organised by the Pelican Centre in Tyldesley. We hope you enjoyed the experience and continue to play this great sport!
Continuing the theme of growing the sport, the Sevenoaks Water Polo Primary Schools Tournament took place on 11 March with over 50 children taking part. A great show-casing event.
Looking forward to the summer when hopefully we will be out of the worst of the lockdown, ManUp have announced their summer dates. These events provide a great opportunity for clubs to compete outside in iconic venues. Further details will follow. Previous events have been well attended and the teams have played some excellent water polo.
Well that’s it for this month. Keep up your training from home – remember that there will come a time when you can get back in the water and play the sport you love. In the meantime continue to train hard. Clubs are doing some really innovative and fun things using social media to facilitate group training.
We hope you have found this month’s report of interest. We aim to showcase what has been going on in English Water Polo clubs over the last month and flag up forthcoming events. Given that we are going to have a slack few months we would like to showcase clubs. If you have any news that you would like to share about your club please contact me at ah@waterpoloengland.org
