July started with a bang at Cheltenham’s Sandford Park Lido where the first senior water polo competition to be played in 18 months took place. City of Manchester was crowned the inaugural winners of the Women’s British Water Polo Festival, and Cheltenham’s men claimed the 2021 British Water Polo Championship title. A total of 12 teams took part in the tournament over 2 days. Although the weather wasn’t as kind as it could have been it was a great festival of sport. Special congratulations to Liverpool’s Katie Hesketh who was the women’s top scorer with nine goals, and Cheltenham’s Tom Hunt who also scored nine goals.
The following weekend saw the women’s British Water Polo Championship held at the K2 Crawley pool. The event started with some fantastic mini polo action with a match between London and the South East region.
This was followed by the gold/silver match between Otter and Tyldesley. Congratulations to Otter our 2021 women’s British Water Polo Championship winners.
July saw the Fun End of Term water polo tournament at Hillingdon. The club puts on the event at the end of every term. Congratulations to this term’s winning team – Ukendar, Luis, Luke and Luke, Hadi, Neil, Oliver and Dominic.
Great to see so many teams thoroughly enjoying being back in action for the first time since the Covid lockdown 17 months ago. Congratulations to the Exeter men’s first team for their impressive 17-9 victory over Southampton.
Exeter women were also pleased to be back in competitions after 16 months
Worthing Under 16 squad travelled to Basingstoke Aquadrome to play a competitive fixture.
Teams from all over the country will come together in the next few weeks, ahead of the start of national league, at this year’s MANUP! Festival.
MANUP! stage a series of one day Summer water polo tournaments, from fantastic open water or outdoor locations – the events provide opportunities for Teams to come together, compete whilst socialising and enjoying some great outdoor water locations. The event series has been running since 2018 and has run events for Senior Men’s and Women’s teams from Media City, Salford Quays and Liverpool’s historic Albert Dock. MANUP! also host Junior water polo events which have been held in outdoor locations in Cheshire.
Last year’s events were forced to cancel due to Covid – but previous events have proved to be a fantastic showcase of the sport and attracted water polo teams from all over the country.
In 2019 local clubs did their City proud at Liverpool’s Albert Dock, with Div. 4 Bridgefield winning the Senior Men’s Championship and City of Liverpool taking the Senior Women’s Champs trophy. City of Manchester Women also brought it home with victory at Salford Quays, with the Men’s Trophy going to Div.3 Castleford
The MANUP! season starts on Saturday 31st July at Liverpool’s Albert Dock (Gower Street), followed by Media City, Salford Quays on Saturday 7th August – both starting from midday. Spectators are welcome to come along and watch for free. The Junior Competition will be held at Nantwich outdoor pool on Sunday 15th August.
Videos and images from previous years events can be found on the MANUP! website at www.facebook.com/manupfestival and clubs can register interest for future events by emailing manupfestival@gmail.com and keep informed of latest news by following the Facebook page.
Finally let’s have a shout out for England Water Polo’s own Andy Rollé who is currently in Tokyo managing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic water polo media coverage for the International Olympic Committee. Andy has provided coverage at three Olympic Games – London 2012, Rio 2016 and now Tokyo 2020. Back home Andy plays for Enfield and Hatfield Water Polo.
We are very excited to see that the fixture list has been published for the start of the British Water Polo League. The women’s campaign makes a spectacular start with a full schedule of matches in Division 1 and 2 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, over the weekend of 25 and 26 September. The men’s competition starts on 18 and 19 September with Division 4 matches at the K4 Crawley pool.
There are games in men’s Division 1, 4 and 5 at Ponds Forge on 9 and 10 October while the men’s Division 1 finale will see BWPL in action for the first time at the new Alan Higgs Centre Olympic pool, Coventry, over 27 and 28 November.
That’s it for this month. It has been great to see clubs getting back into action after such a long break. If your club has any news you would like us to showcase please contact me at ah@waterpoloengland.org
