Happy New Year!
Welcome to our January 2023 News. We hope that you have all had a very enjoyable Christmas and are ready for the excitement of the water polo year to come! Here is a picture of Sheffield sharing some seasonal cheer at the National Age Groups to keep us in the festive mood!
First off, we would like to congratulate West London Penguin who were crowned Under 15 Boys’ National Age Group Champions 2022 after narrowly beating defending champions, City Of Manchester, 6-4 in the final. Congratulations also to Penguin players Shai Saltman who was the top scorer of the tournament with 27 goals over 5 matches and Karagiannis who was the Most Valuable Player.
The Bronze medal was taken by City of Chester after a tense match which went down to penalties against Beckenham. City of Chester’s Jamie Collins was the tournament’s top goalkeeper.
In the under 15s National Age Group Champions Girls’ event the final was between City of Manchester and Beckenham. City of Manchester had won all their group stage matches and were on top form. They took the title with a convincing 13-4 win. This completed the trilogy with City of Manchester wining all the girls’ National Age Group Championships this year having won both the under 17s and under 19s events in May. This is an amazing achievement and shows that the club is going from strength to strength. Very well done all!
City of Manchester’s Lucy Blenkinship had an outstanding tournament scoring 32 goals. She took home both the top scorer and most valuable player awards.
The bronze medal went to last year’s winners, City of Cheltenham, after they defeated City of Sheffield 8-6.
Jessica Freeman of City of Liverpool was the tournament’s top goalkeeper.
In the BWPL the men were in action at Haberdashers. On the first day of the weekend Cheltenham beat Sheffield 11-7 to knock Sheffield out of the Super 5s competition. The Super 5s qualifiers are thus Cheltenham, Lancaster, Manchester, Penguin and Polytechnic. They will join the women qualifiers (Manchester, Liverpool, Coventry, Hucknall and Otter) at Aldershot on 21/22 January, followed by Ponds Forge on 11/12 February, Coventry on 4/5 March and Haberdashers on 1/2 April.
On Saturday 26 November, the City of Plymouth Lamb Trophy was held for the first time in the Plymouth Life Centre and, for the first time since the 1980s, a ladies’ competition was held alongside the men’s competition. The men’s competition was won by a strong Newquay team, who won the tournament with 3 late goals against runners-up Devonport A, 9-6.
The ladies’ competition was a huge success and produced some exciting matches. Possibly the most exciting was the derby between Devonport A and Devonport B which was drawn with 8 goals apiece. The tournament was eventually won by Devonport A.
After the event, several members of the Devonport men’s water polo team went out for a curry and some light refreshments. At the dinner, a very special announcement was made to the team. One of their number, Richard Thynne, had been awarded Life Membership of the club. Richard was presented with a commemorative DRSA water polo cap, which he then wore for the rest of the evening.
The London Water Polo League Winter under 12s Championships started in December and it was great to see Hillingdon Penguin competing with many new faces on the team. Although the results didn’t all go their way, it is good to see them learn through the experience of playing.
