EU Nations Club Cup Report Sept 2016
On Saturday 24th September 2016, City of Coventry Women’s Water Polo team re-entered international club water polo for the first time in a decade as they started the EU nations Club Cup in Prague, held in the bracing outdoor Plavecký stadion Podolí pool.
Coventry’s first game was against the Czech champions, Stepp Praha, and despite the bright and early start and the challenge of playing outdoors, Coventry controlled the game winning 7-5, with the goals shared between 5 of City of Coventry’s players.
The second game of the day saw Coventry play the German side Chemnitz. This was an
incredibly close game with Coventry losing the 1st quarter 2-1, and drawing the 2nd.
However a determined 3rd quarter saw Coventry achieve an 8-8 draw. Again, goals were spread among 4 of Coventry’s players including Ella Cotton, Coventry’s most junior player at just 15 years of age.
Sunday morning’s final game was against the Swedish Champions, Järfälla. Knowing that if victory was secured, goal difference for this match would decide tournament winners Coventry made a good start, winning the first quarter 4-1. The momentum was carried through to win the game 13-4, with an excellent last minute man-up goal from Annabelle Blurton another of Coventry’s junior players.
Despite this victory, Coventry took silver medal, with the German side Chemnits winning on goal difference. The tournament was a great success and a good confidence builder for all of the players in preparation for the new British Water Polo League season.
Fran Clayton was selected as the tournament MVP with her 9 goals making her Coventry’s
leading goal scorer.
Thanks to the City of Coventry Head Coach, Ian Elliot and all the other team staff for their
contribution over the weekend
