GBR Senior Men’s World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Div B Qualification 9-12 March 2023. Otopeni, ROM. Results

Game 1 v ROM
Great Britain’s return to international water polo ended in a tough 16-2 (5-0, 2-0, 4-2, 5-0) defeat to Romania as their World Cup Division B campaign got underway on Thursday night. Dan Paddon and Ryan Symington reduced the deficit in the third quarter, but Great Britain were always expected to struggle against the hosts, who fielded 10 players who finished 10th at last year’s European Championships in Split. Fantastic experience for all the squad, who are back in action tomorrow morning against Ukraine, 8am start UK time.
Tonight’s clash with Romania brought back memories of the two-legged play-off the teams contested back in 2014, with Great Britain level at 6-6 at half-time in Sunderland before being beaten 18-8.
Game 2 v UKR
Great Britain produced a strong final quarter against Ukraine this morning at the World Cup, with Exeter’s Kamz Powell firing in twice to complete an impressive hat-trick, but it wasn’t enough to stop a 12-9 (4-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-6) defeat
Sutton’s Ryan Symington and Sedgefield’s John Pratt both scored two, while Manchester’s Aaron Winstanley and Jordan Elliot were also on target for Great Britain.
An impressive and battling performance from our young squad, who were playing against a much more experienced team. Plenty of positives to take and lots to build on going into the next game, which is a clash with Malta on Saturday, 3.30pm start UK time.
Game 3 v MALTA
Great Britain’s senior men suffered a narrow 9-7 (2-2, 2-2, 2-0, 3-3) loss to Malta in their third World Cup game in Romania
Nick Hume’s young squad put in an impressive performance and more than matched Malta for three quarters, with Sedgefield’s John Pratt and Cheltenham’s Tom Hunt leading the scoring with two goals each.
Exeter’s Kamz Powell, Invicta’s Dan Atkinson and Manchester’s Dan Paddon were also on the scoresheet, while Manchester’s Tom Manley pulled off a series of sensational saves in goal.
Great Britain will finish their World Cup campaign with a clash against Germany on Sunday, 9.30am start UK time.
Game 4 v GER
Great Britain’s senior men finished their World Cup campaign with a battling 15-4 (3-1, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2) defeat to Germany on Sunday morning 🤽‍♂️ 🇬🇧 🇩🇪
Manchester’s Dan Paddon fired in a well-taken hat-trick after Sedgefield’s John Pratt opened the scoring for Great Britain in the first quarter.
A tough clash against another professional outfit, but great experience for all the players ahead of their European qualifiers, and fantastic to finally see our senior men’s squad back playing elite international water polo
