Great Britain’s senior women were beaten 23-7 (7-0, 4-1, 7-3, 5-3) by New Zealand and 15-7 (2-2, 5-1, 5-2, 3-2) by Kazakhstan on Day 1 of the World Aquatics World Cup Division 2
Great Britain’s senior women suffered a narrow 15-12 (3-3, 4-3, 3-2, 5-4) defeat to Germany in their final preliminary match at the World Cup in Berlin.
Nick Buller’s squad pushed the hosts throughout with Annie Clapperton continuing her fine form with a six-goal haul, taking her tournament tally to 14 from the three games so far.
Great Britain’s senior women beat Ukraine 10-4 (3-1, 2-1, 1-2, 4-0) in their final game at the World Cup Division 2 tournament in Berlin on Thursday
The result means Nick Buller’s squad finished seventh overall and it was fantastic to see all the players progress so much throughout the three days of competition.
Kathy Rogers and Mhairi Nurthen were joint top scorers against Ukraine with four goals each, while Annie Clapperton (1) and Rebecca Mulchay (1) were also on target for Great Britain.
The victory was a superb way to end the team’s long-awaited return to top-level international water polo and the young and developing squad will now turn their attention to next month’s European Championships Qualification Tournament (23-25 June) in Portugal
Player of the game Kathy Rogers said after the Ukraine match: “This was our first LEN/World Aquatics event in nearly a decade, and following the early losses, to still be able to improve game after game shows the character of these girls. I’m super proud of them all, especially with everyone’s dedication and hard work. It’s been great to be here competing.”
