We are pleased to report that the Water Polo Management Group has advised us that following collaboration between the British Water Polo Management Group and the executives of British Swimming, an application has been submitted to UK Sport for Aspiration Funding for the GBR Men’s and Women’s programme.
Aspiration Funding is a Government initiative to provide £3M for Olympic sports which have not been funded in this Olympic cycle up to Tokyo 2020 which means that expectations are tempered by the understanding that the British Swimming bid on behalf of GBR water polo will face stiff competition from a number of much larger team sports.
Ian Elliot told us, ‘Irrespective of the outcome, I am pleased to have the support of Jack Buckner, CEO of British Swimming in our attempt to revitalise our senior programme.”

Whilst this is Great news indeed, if not tempered by the possiblity that other louder sports may receive funding and Water Polo little or even non.
What is being done about the lack of “Normal Funding” for Water Polo grass roots and clubs which are the bedrock of any sport. Have Sport England and in particular Swim England provided a break down of Water Polo funding for 2018/19/20 ? not the possiblity of a hand me down for Olmypic funding ?
Got it be in it to win it. Fingers cross d for a good outcome
I have thought long and hard about leaving a reply to this article.
I think it is a disgrace that the water polo in this country have to apply to the lottery for funding , it is about time water polo is given its fair share of the pot from the swimming fraternity.
For years this sport has struggled to get recognised by the as a, the young people of this sport deserve better.
Having said all that I will keep my fingers crossed that there will be some sort of funding for these young people after dedicating so much time and money into their sport.
Well, guess what, looks like water polo missed out on funding in today’s announcement.
