The English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) hosted a very successful 2019 Duke of Cambridge Cup Event at the Manchester Aquatic Centre on Saturday June 22nd marking a significant milestone for ESSA as for the first time equal numbers of boys and girls were competing. The format of the Cup event involved the selection of 39 girls and 39 boys from the born-2003 age group from those who expressed an interest, with the event acting as selection for teams to represent ESSA in Hungary in October.
The Duke of Cambridge Cup water polo teams are named after famous RAF planes as the Duke of Cambridge was a serving officer in the RAF when the event started, and in the event the overall winners were Team Vulcan, with Spitfire and Hurricane taking silver and bronze.
Thanks go to GBR international Rosie Huck, who was on hand to present medals to the athletes involved after the final game.

How could players express an interest if they knew nothing about the event ?
Thanks for your comment Pauline. We have asked ESSA to respond and they have replied as follows:
“Nominations for the Duke of Cambridge Cup were made from all water polo playing Schools via ESSA contact and via the National Academy for this age group.”
Hope that’s helpful
Best wishes

It appears the Essa dates Hungary competition clashes with BWPL Div 1 and Div 2 Women Champs so the National calendar is working well. The BWPL teams train all summer preparing for the competition and then ESSA decide to organise a training camp in Hungary
