Seasons greetings to all our clubs! -

Our Christmas photo this year comes from Penguin Water Polo Club whose players enjoyed a festive swim at the Hampton outdoor pool.

This month has seen the finale of the British Water Polo Women’s Division 1 with the five top teams going forward to the Super Fives next year.  Massive congratulations to City of Manchester whose team have gone through unbeaten as the leaders.  The other qualifiers are – Sheffield Sharks, City of Coventry, Liverpool Lizards and Otter. Steph Whittaker is the league’s top goal scorer on 26 goals, which works out at an amazing average of 3.5 goals per match. Great achievement Manchester!

The Men’s Division one competition has been fiercely contested with the final matches being played over the weekend of 30 November/1 December so too late for this month’s News.  

The Hampshire under 16 Water Polo Tournament took place on 16 November hosted by Basingstoke Bluefins.  Kingston Royals defeated Worthing in a tough final to take the top spot.  

The Swim England Water Polo National Age Group Championships for the under 15 girls took place at the beginning of November.  Otter held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout to win the title over City of Liverpool.

In the Boys event Sedgefield came through undefeated to take the gold position beating Devonport in a tense final.

The London Water Polo League: Division 3 tournament took place in Croydon on 3 November.  This was the first competition in which the newly assembled Hillingdon Penguin Under 16 team competed.  They had a great tournament drawing two games and narrowly losing one.  Keep going guys!

The British Swimming Awards night took place on 14 November to celebrate the outstanding aquatic athletes of the year.  The female Water Polo star of the year was Otter and University of California player, Lily Turner.  This caps what has been a fantastic year for the young Brit.  The male Water Polo Athlete of the Year was Cheltenham Swimming & Water Polo Club’s Charlie Brogan.  This is a great opportunity to showcase the sport and we are very proud of both athletes!

Another winner on the night was Solihull’s Phil Powell who is the British Swimming Water Polo Coach of the Year.  Well done!

British Swimming Awards

The 2019 Spud Murphy Shield under 16 tournament took place on 16 November with seven clubs from across Kent competing.  This made it the largest Kent tournament ever.  It was a great event with a lot of hotly contested games.  There could only be one winner and that was Beckenham.  Congratulations to Beckenham and all the other which took part in the event.

Thanks to Rosie Morris for letting us know about the half term trip the Under 16 squad from King Edward’s School, Birmingham, took to Paphos, Cyprus. The squad were there for six days, with two hours training every morning and really competitive games against Paphos every evening. Everything there was organised for them by Giannisinfo@cyprusathletictourism.com who is really keen for other clubs and schools to visit! 

The Royal Air Force water polo team recently enjoyed a set of fixtures out in Malta. They had a game at the famous Neptunes quayside pool, followed by a small tournament in the sea at Barracudas at the northern end of the island.

Up and Coming Events

Want to train to be a water polo coach?  A blended course is being run at Whitgift School, South Croydon.  Full details in poster below.

A reminder that the next University Water Polo Clinic will take place on 14 December.  The event will include a talk about applying to university in America.  See details below.
