Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year!
Welcome to our December News, and yes, there is some! At the time of going to the press we are coming to the end of Lockdown 2.0 and waiting for the guidance about whether we will be able to return to water polo training in all or only in some tiers. Covid-19 rates are going down across the country and there is hope that a vaccine will soon be available. We wait to find out what the 2021/22 season will look like.
It has been a long month and the uncertainty is wearing, but the water polo community has continued to put a positive spin on the situation reverting to virtual club training events and raising a lot of money for charity.
There is also some positive planning for next year. Penguin under 12s are off to Italy to participate in the HaBaWaBa International Festival where they will spend a week competing against other teams from around the world. The under 14s are also off to Italy to participate in the u14 event. No wonder they look so excited!
While pools were closed due to Covid-19, from May to August the Hillingdon Penguin water polo coaches ran many strength and conditioning sessions over Zoom. When they came to make the Jack Petchey Achievement Award it seemed only fitting that it should go to their most enthusiastic Zoom participant, under 15 player, Lize. Lize was presented with her award in front of her team-mates. Congratulations Lize!
Chelmsford have also been keeping fit by holding gazebo-based Zoom training throughout November.
Watford Water Polo Club has been running a very popular virtual training programme throughout the pandemic, which saw almost 1,000 attendances at sessions in October. The club has continued the effort throughout November with sessions in yoga, stability and Mobility and even a club quiz!
University of Manchester Water Polo club has been fundraising in support of MIND by taking on the challenge to run, walk or cycle from Manchester Aquatic Centre (where they usually train) to the Olympic pool in London and back (432 miles). University of Manchester Men have also raised money for Movember by running the length of the UK (1,406 miles)
City of Birmingham set a challenge to undertake 3,000 press-ups throughout November in aid of the teenage Cancer Trust. An amazing achievement chaps.
2020 has certainly not been the year anyone expected. We hope that you have all kept safe and well, and that you are able to get back to training soon. We also take this opportunity to wish you all a fabulous Christmas and a very happy New Year!
We hope you find this report of interest. We aim to showcase what has been going on in English Water Polo clubs over the last month and flag up forthcoming events. If you have any news that you would like to share about your club please contact me at ah@waterpoloengland.org
