Welcome to our almost-back-in-the-water April monthly newsletter! - April 1, 2021
Welcome to our April edition of Water Polo News, and this month we have some good reasons to be optimistic about the future. The sun is out and we have started the journey out of lockdown. Schools are back and pupils are able to participate in some training. From 12 April we can start swimming indoors on an individual basis and from 17 May, assuming that the coronavirus pandemic remains under control, we will see the return to full water polo training in indoor pools. Happy days!
A British Festival of Water Polo has already been announced. It will take place over the weekend of 3rd /4th July and will be a great opportunity to see clubs in action. The men’s event will take place at Sandford Park Lido and the confirmed participants are Lancaster, Manchester, Sheffield, Invicta, Cheltenham and Sutton & Cheam. We await details of the women’s event.
In an effort to help players get back to match fitness, Swim England is to launch a new team competition called Level X Water Polo at the beginning of April. Players under 18 will be able to take part in the competition when indoor pools reopen from Monday 12 April. Over 18s will have to wait until indoor organised sport is given the all clear to resume – which will hopefully be 17 May. Full details of the competition are yet to be announced but it will involve water polo players completing a series of core skills each week whilst building up their fitness. The team with the best score will win.
It is still hoped that the BWPL will resume matches from September. The vaccination programme is making great progress and Committee will be meeting in mid April to review the position.
This month we were very sad to learn of the death of John ‘Shakey’ Lake who was a much-loved member of Penguin: as a swimmer, water polo player, coach and past President. Our Teammates in America
Our friends in the US have been able to play competitive matches despite the pandemic. They are now moving into the later stage of the season, and have they been racking up the game time. Kathy Rogers and Sophie Jackson at the University of Michigan are currently 15-4 this season with plenty of goals and saves coming from the girls respectively.

Robyn Greenslade’s Indiana team are currently 8-8 this season after a series of tough games against top 5 teams with Robyn being an integral part of the team during these games. Over at the University of California, Berkeley, Cecily Turner has been enjoying her second season with the Bears who are currently 5-4 overall with Lily scoring against #1 ranked USC.

Meanwhile out even further west, Mhairi Nurthen at Hawaii is more geographically restricted than her fellow Brits abroad and has only been able to play 2 games, splitting the results.
