It’s March and time to lift the gloom with water polo news! - March 1, 2022

Welcome to our March edition of Water Polo News.  We aim to provide a snapshot of what is happening in our clubs in England.  If you have any news that you would like to share please contact us using the contact details at the end of this report.

We start off by congratulating Watford’s U16s who have finished top of the Winter League North Division.  In the first round they lost to Northampton but then won their other 2 games.  The second round took place at Latymer School in February.  Watford won the first match against Hillingdon 9-1.  The second game was against Northampton which they won 6-2.  The final match was another win against Latymer.  Watford will now go through to play the top two teams from the London South Division on 20 March.

Watford under 14s also had a successful trip to Hillingdon Leisure Complex on 20 February.  They won all three of their games; Lewisham 11-1, Croydon 6-2 and Hillingdon 5-3.

Penguin under 12s have competed for the first time in the London Water Polo League.  They had a great first outing with 2 wins and a draw.  You look like you had a great time and we look forward to following your progress in the months to come.

West London Penguins have been in action in Women’s Championship 2 with one win and a loss.  They are in a strong position as they look forward to the final weekend in March.

The men’s and women’s Super 5s teams were in action this month at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.  City of Manchester men’s and women’s teams have again been in great form.  The women beat Coventry 12-2 and Otter 12-7 and they go into the final weekend at the top of the leader board.

City of Manchester Men had a close match against Sheffield finally winning by 5 goals to 4.  They beat Cheltenham 14 goals to 4.

Lancaster was another team having a good weekend in the Super 5s beating Cheltenham 9-8 and Solihull 7-6

Tyldesley top the Women’s championship 1 and will return to Division 1 next season, while Manchester Hawks top the Men’s Championship 2 ahead of the final weekend of play in March.

In Men’s Championship 3, the British Army had a very successful weekend at Marlborough with 3 wins out of 3 against Newport (12-10), Tyldesley (17-15) and Birmingham (10-5).

Hillingdon under 12s enjoyed an exciting afternoon of water polo at Croydon Whitgift school competing in the London Water polo League tournament.  They won 2 matches, drew 2 and lost 2.  The trophy for Most Valuable Player was shared between Jacob and Zain.

The Army ladies team played National League side Southampton Sirens.  It was a welcome return to the pool for several army players and there were several new players joining the team.  In the end Southampton won by 3 goals (14-11) but it was a good match and excellent experience for the Army team.

Finally we would like to express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine as they suffer invasion of their sovereign territory.  Many of the English water polo community will have visited Ukraine to play water polo or met Ukrainian teams at tournaments across Europe.  Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
