Mixed fortunes in Europe for our English clubs as the 2024 Women’s Challenge Cup gets underway today -

In Group C in Strakonice in the Czech Republic, Former UC Santa Barbara star Sarah Snyder bagged a sensational five-goal haul as London Otter opened their account with a 13-10 victory over the Turkish side, Dalton Koleji SK.

The London-based side took control of the game early on and were 6-2 up at the turnaround.

Snyder’s efforts were backed up brilliantly by Great Britain international Rebecca Mulcahy, who fired in four times, and although the Turkish side pulled the score back to 10-9 early in the fourth, Izzy Dean was on hand to quickly restore Otter’s two-goal advantage.

Dean’s strike all but ended Dalton Koleji SK’s fightback as Mulcahy and Snyder both scored again to seal the win, much to the delight of their head coach Nick Buller, who guided Great Britain to seventh place at the 2024 European Championships in Eindhoven.

Over in Serbia, Group A’s final game of the day saw the reigning champions Izmir Buyuksehir SK take on Great Britain champions City of Manchester WPC.

With Canadian Olympian Emma Wright and Australia’s Paris 2024 silver medallist Danijela Jackovich among the Izmir ranks, Manchester were always facing an uphill task, and so it proved as the Turkish side opened up a 2-7 lead by the turnaround.

Manchester’s defence managed to restrict the title-holders to three goals in the second and four in the third, but they were struggling to find any joy in attack and trailed 2-11 going into the final eight minutes.

The Brits then went on a scoring spree themselves with a 4-0 surge in the fourth, which helped make the scoreline slightly more respectable, but it was too little, too late as the points were already safely with Izmir.

Elsewhere over in Malta for Group B, hosts Sliema beat Hapoel Emek Hayarden 14-10. It was Sliema’s young Great Britain star centre Amelie Perkins who shone the brightest, as she rifled in eight times, including a well-taken penalty.
