Game 1, GBR v SVK
Great Britain’s U19s started their European Championships campaign with an impressive 7-6 (3-1, 2-2, 0-1, 2-2) victory over Slovakia.
A strong opening quarter and some excellent shooting from distance proved the difference, as Great Britain gained an early lead they never surrendered.
Captain Annie Clapperton led from the front, firing in from outside 5m to secure a sensational hat-trick late in the fourth, while Katy Cutler (2), Lily Turner and Stephanie Whittaker were also on target.
Slovakia struggled to find a way past Great Britain’s press throughout and when they did, goalkeeper Sophie Jackson was in fine form with a string of stunning saves to ensure a winning start.
Game 2 HUN v GBR
Great Britain’s Katy Cutler and Lily Turner both scored two wonder goals against powerhouses Hungary, but it wasn’t enough to stop a 14-4 (2-0, 2-2, 5-1, 5-1) defeat.
A defiant Great Britain defended superbly against the European giants for the first half, pressing in numbers and staying firmly in the game at the turnaround.
Hungary managed to pull away in the final two quarters but this proved to be a good workout for Great Britain ahead of the following day’s crunch final preliminary match against Israel.
Game 3 GBR v ISR
Great Britain’s U19s drew 5-5 (2-1, 2-1, 0-1, 1-2) with Israel in their final preliminary match of the European Championships.
The result was frustrating for Great Britain, who looked to be in control at the turnaround after another strong start.
But it wasn’t to be as Israel fought back in the second half to claim the draw and take second place in Group B.
Lily Turner was in fine form once again for Great Britain, scoring twice, while captain Annie Clapperton, Stephanie Whittaker and Milly Wordley also fired home.
The result means Great Britain will now face Greece on Wednesday at 7.30pm for a place in the quarter-finals.
Congratulations and good luck to Israel, who are investing heavily in their junior and senior programmes and starting to improve rapidly.
Israel’s U19s have trained with professional coaches twice a day for the past 18 months, specifically for this tournament, so to push them today was an excellent achievement for Great Britain.
Competing at these Championships is a fantastic reflection of all the hard work and dedication from our players, coaches, parents and the Water Polo Management Group.
Game 4, GRE v GBR
Great Britain’s U19s went down fighting against a very strong Greece 12-6 (4-0, 1-2, 5-3, 2-1) at the European Championships in Madeira on Wednesday.
Lily Turner scored a hat-trick for Great Britain, while captain Annie Clapperton, Stephanie Whittaker and Robyn Greenslade also hit the target.
It was another fantastic team performance by Great Britain and it was the perfect response from the players after yesterday’s disappointing result against Israel.
Great Britain will now face the Czech Republic in the 9th-12th semi-finals

Great Britain’s U19s stormed to a commanding 13-5 (2-1, 3-2, 3-0, 5-2) victory over the Czech Republic in the 9th-12th semi-finals of the European Championships.
Stephanie Whittaker top scored with four, taking her tournament tally to seven, as Great Britain returned to winning ways and set up a thrilling 9th-10th final against Germany on Friday, 6pm start.
Captain Annie Clapperton (2), Katy Cutler (2), Milly Wordley (1), Amelia Peters (1), Lauren Dundee (1), Emmie-Rose Eastwood (1) and Robyn Greenslade (1) were Great Britain’s other scorers against the Czechs as Nick Hume’s players outclassed their opponents in every department to seal the much-needed win.
Game 6, GER v GBR
Great Britain’s U19s finished ninth at the European Championships after beating Germany 10-5 (1-2, 3-2, 5-0, 1-1) in a thrilling 9th/10th final in Madeira on Friday.
Stephanie Whittaker, Milly Wordley and Robyn Greenslade top scored for Great Britain with two goals each, as Nick Hume’s squad fought back brilliantly from 2-1 down to win the match and ensure they ended the tournament on a high.
Captain Annie Clapperton (1), Lily Turner (1), Katy Cutler (1) and Emmie-Rose Eastwood (1) were also among the goals as Great Britain delivered another outstanding performance, working relentlessly as a unit in defence and attack.
